The Learn Reading Program is a real-world reading acquisition program for learners of all ages. It uses a frequency-of-use teaching model, introducing graphemes and phonemes in the order they appear in everyday English print. The lessons are multi-sensory and adhere to an Orton Gillingham foundation.

Comprehensive Instruction

The curriculum includes comprehensive instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics application, controlled blending, comprehension, vocabulary, sight words, fluency, expression, phrasing, and all aspects of proper reading instruction. April McMurtrey, a trained dyslexia specialist, created this program to provide fundamental reading skills for struggling readers and challenge more advanced students.

Each lesson in the Learn Reading Program includes several short assignments, keeping busy minds and hands focused, and success and esteem high. Games and activities are incorporated into each lesson. Sketching and/or acting out what the student is reading about is encouraged, facilitating comprehension and making learning fun!

Your student will learn the 3 key aspects of the "McMurtrey Method," which are game changers in a young or struggling reader's life. They will learn how to use a physical reading guide and what is called "pencil reading." This teaching method has helped even the most struggling readers achieve reading success!

Vowel Placement Strategy

The McMurtrey Method includes the vowel placement strategy, which helps the reader understand what a vowel will say based on where it falls in a word, and the letters that surround it. The method also teaches the "give a goal" strategy, helping students learn HOW to read instead of guessing.
